With escalating rates of poverty, the housing crisis, more frequent natural disasters and the impacts of climate change, these are just some of the reasons why more Australians are turning to the for-purpose sector every day for help. The need for increased charitable giving is greater than ever.

Women have always played an important role in giving and supporting positive social change in Australia.

As more women come into greater levels of education and agency, and with women expected to be custodians of more than 65% of the anticipated $5.4trillion of intergenerational wealth being transferred over the next 20 years (JBWere, 2024), the opportunity is NOW to celebrate the incredible contributions of women as agents for positive social change.

She Gives shines a light on the power and collective contribution of women’s giving in Australia by sharing the inspiring stories of 100 women. Launched in July 2024 as a 12-month campaign, it will help us celebrate, share and inspire women’s giving in Australia. Equity Trustees, alongside many other partners and collaborators is proud to be a Sector Partner of She Gives.

The She Gives initiative is part of a broader national agenda to create a stronger giving culture and grow overall giving in this country. The Blueprint for Structured Giving which was launched in 2021 and the more recent Productivity Commission report, Future Foundations for Giving are all part of the movement to inspire more to give, encourage those giving already to give more and for all to give more impactfully.

As Carol Schwartz, Chair of Equity Trustees and She Gives Advisory Committee member shared recently, ‘there is a huge opportunity for us to do more. More giving, more recognition and more visibility to the important work being done… the opportunity to grow giving especially sits with women. The data already shows that women give a higher proportion of their income than men and generally shape giving within the family unit. Not everyone calls themselves a philanthropist, or considers themselves in that role, yet they are contributing to things that matter to them. Anyone who donates their time, money or talent to create a better world is a philanthropist’.

24 of the 100 stories have already been released. Read the stories here.
